Iranian-British Nazanin Zagari-Ratcliffe, who until now was banned from leaving Iran, regained her British passport, as a British MP announced today, reviving hopes for her return to the United Kingdom.
“I’m very pleased to announce that Nazanin Zagari-Ratcliffe has regained her British passport,” said Tulip Siddique, a Labor MP in the Hampstead and Kilburn constituencies (north London), in a Twitter post. Zagari-Ratcliffe.
Nazanin Zagari-Ratcliffe “is still at her family’s home in Tehran,” she added. “I also understand that there is a British negotiating team in Tehran.”
According to her employer, the Thomson Reuters Foundation, Hojat Kermani’s lawyer said when asked if Zagari-Ratcliffe would be released: “I hope we will have good news soon.” The Foreign Ministry did not respond immediately to a communication from the French Agency.
Zagari-Ratcliffe, project manager at the Thomson Reuters Foundation, the charity of the company that also owns the Reuters news agency, was arrested in Tehran in April 2016, where she was visiting her family. She was accused of plotting to overthrow Islamic democracy, which she vehemently denied, and was sentenced to five years in prison.
After serving her sentence, she was again sentenced in late April to one year in prison for participating in a rally in front of the Iranian embassy in London in 2009.
In October 2021, Zagari-Ratcliffe saw her appeal rejected, with her own expressing fears of her immediate return to prison, from where she came out with an electronic bracelet in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
