Iranian footballer is sentenced to death for supporting women’s proposals

Few scenes cause the revulsion caused by the murder of Mahsa Amini, the young woman tortured to death at the hands of the morality police, for not wearing her hijab correctly. Possibly the only thing capable of beating this level of disgust is the fact that Iran represses the protests at the World Cup in Qatar, thus achieving a scene with grotesque symbolism.

As if this were not enough, another event shakes the mirage of splendor represented by soccer, since various media such as iranwire or the Federation of Professional Soccer Players (FIFPRO), have announced the unusual decision that the Islamic Republic has taken following the protests of the soccer player Amir Nasr-Azadani, 26 years old.

Amir Nasr-Azadani professional footballer

In an attempt to stop the fight for Iranian women’s rights, the Ayatollahs have sentenced protesters to death, with Amir next to face public execution. Under Iranian law, Nasr-Azadani has committed a mortal sin by supporting the protests, which translates as “enmity with God” or “moharebeh.”

Faced with this unfortunate event, FIFPRO expressed its solidarity with the player from Esfahan, Iran, as they did not hesitate to make their outrage public after learning of the possible execution of the footballer. In addition to the union, the Colombian player Radamel Falcao García also showed his annoyance in social networkswhere he called the decision “unacceptable”.

FIFPRO is shocked and saddened by the news that professional footballer Amir Nasr-Azadani is facing execution in Iran after campaigning for women’s rights and fundamental freedoms in his country. We stand in solidarity with Amir and ask that his punishment be annulled immediately.

According to Asadullah Jafari, the city’s Supreme Court, the athlete has been in custody since November 27, but the sentence has not yet been issued. The reason for the trial is because the defendant is allegedly one of the members who caused the death of three security agents during protests in central Iran.

Majid Reza Rahnavard on trial

It is worth mentioning that last Monday, December 12, the wrestler Majid Reza Rahnavard was hanged after being sentenced to death on the same day of his trial for murdering two security agents with a knife and injuring four others. According to Amnesty International, Iran is one of the world’s leading countries that apply the death penalty, with more than 500 cases so far this year.
