Iranian lawmakers present conditions to reactivate nuclear deal

Iranian lawmakers set out six conditions for the revival of Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with global powers in a letter to President Ebrahim Raisi published on Sunday, state agency IRNA reported.

Signed by 250 of the 290 lawmakers, the letter notes that US and European representatives should ensure that they would not leave a restored agreement, nor trigger the “rollback mechanism” under which sanctions on Iran would be immediately reinstated in the event of a breach. of nuclear compliance.

The parliament did not vote on the proposed conditions and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the support of hardliners at the helm of the legislature, has the final word on Iran’s nuclear policy and all other matters of state.

“We have to learn a lesson from past experiences and put a red line on the national interest by not committing to any agreement without first obtaining the necessary guarantees”, explain the parliamentarians in the letter.

The statement comes amid the final stages of negotiations to reactivate a 2015 Vienna nuclear deal that could lead to a deal “very soon”, according to a senior European Union official.

Such conditions placed by lawmakers at a crucial moment risk restricting Iranian negotiators’ room for maneuver in Vienna and jeopardize a final deal.
