Iranian man who inspired ‘The Terminal’ movie dies inside Paris airport

Mehran Karimi Nasseri the man who lived inside Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport in the French capital for years and inspired Steven Spielberg’s film, “The terminal” (2004), died on Saturday (12) at the same airport.

Nasseri was pronounced dead by airport medical staff in Terminal 2F and died of natural causes, an airport spokesperson told CNN 🇧🇷

Nasseri, an Iranian refugee, was en route to England via Belgium and France in 1988 when he lost his documents and was unable to board a flight or leave the airport and was stuck in limbo until 2006.

He “has returned to living as a homeless person in the public area of the airport since mid-September, after a stay in a nursing home,” the spokesman said.

The spokesperson added that Nasseri was an “iconic character” at the airport and that “the entire airport community was linked to him, and our team took care of him as much as possible for many years, even though we would have preferred him to find true shelter.”

While Nasseri’s story inside the airport was recalled by Tom Hanks in the film “The terminal” , the airport spokesperson noted that: “Spielberg’s film suggests he was stuck in a transit zone in Paris-Charles de Gaulle. In reality, he spent several stays there, but always in the public area of the airport, he was always free to move around.”

At one point, French authorities offered him permission to reside in France, but Nasseri declined the offer, allegedly because he wanted to reach his original destination, England.
