Iranian state media reported today that Argentine authorities had seized a Boeing 747 aircraft whose original owner, Iranian Mahan Air, said it had been sold to a Venezuelan airline a year ago, according to Reuters. There has been no official confirmation of the reports so far.
“Ownership of the aircraft was transferred a year ago and sold to a Venezuelan company,” Mahan spokesman Amir Hossein Zolanvari told the official IRNA news agency. Zolanvari did not name the Venezuelan company.
It was not immediately clear if the plane was on a list of Iranian aircraft subject to US sanctions. Mahan Air has been under US sanctions since 2011 for its support of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.
Iran and Venezuela, both of which are under US sanctions, have close ties. The two countries signed a 20-year co-operation plan on Saturday.
