Iranian president promises retaliation after Israeli attack in Syria

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi strongly condemned this Saturday (20) the deaths of five members of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in an alleged Israeli missile attack on the Syrian capital, Damascus, according to Iranian state media Press TV.

Raisi promised that Iran will retaliate, saying such “cowardly” acts will not go unanswered.

The head of state also said that the attack is “another stain on the record of all governments that claim to be defenders of human rights, because it violated Syrian airspace and violated human and international laws”, according to Iranian state media.

The Syrian Defense Ministry stated that Israel “launched an airstrike from the Golan Heights at 10:20 am local time, which targeted a residential building in the Mazzeh neighborhood of Damascus.”

In a statement, the ministry highlighted that its defenses managed to intercept and shoot down “a series of enemy missiles”.

The Israeli military declined to comment on Iranian and Syrian allegations that they were behind the attack. An Israel Defense Forces spokesperson told CNN: “We do not comment on foreign reports.”
