A general in the Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iran’s ideological army, was killed during a “mission” in Syria, Iranian state media reported today.
“General Abolfazi Alijani, a member of the Revolutionary Guards’ ground forces who was on a mission to Syria as a military adviser, was martyred on Sunday,” state television said on its website.
Alijani was described as a “defender of the sanctuary”, a term used for those working on behalf of Iran in Syria or Iraq, without elaborating on the attack in which he was killed.
Iran is helping the regime of its ally Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the war and says it is deploying military advisers to Syria.
In early August, the funerals of five Guardsmen killed in Syria several years ago were held in Tehran and other Iranian cities after their bodies were found and identified through DNA tests, according to Iranian media.
In March, the Guards said an Israeli strike in Syria had killed two of their officers, warning Israel that it would “pay for this crime”.
In recent years, Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in Syria, targeting regime positions as well as its Iranian-backed allied forces and fighters from the pro-Iranian Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah.
Israel, which borders Syria, rarely comments on the strikes but has admitted to launching hundreds since 2011. The Israeli military has defended the strikes, saying they were necessary to prevent Iran from establishing itself on its doorstep.
Iran and Israel have been engaged in a shadow war for years, with Tehran accusing its arch-enemy of carrying out acts of sabotage against its nuclear facilities and murdering key figures, mainly scientists.
The Revolutionary Guards are on the United States’ list of “terrorist organizations.”
