Iranian, Saudi FMs expected to meet in Iraq soon

The foreign ministers of Iran and Saudi Arabia are expected to meet in Iraq soon, an Iranian lawmaker told the semi-official Fars news agency today.

A possible meeting of the two countries’ leaders will be seen as a step towards easing tensions in the Middle East between regional enemies.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry was not immediately available for comment.

“Iranian Hussein Amirabdolahian and Faisal bin Farhan of Saudi Arabia will soon meet in Iraq to discuss issues such as the opening of embassies and regional issues such as the crisis in Yemen,” Iranian Foreign Minister Khamenei told Fars. more details.

The predominantly Sunni Muslim Saudi Arabia and Shiite Iran, embroiled in proxy clashes across the Middle East, began direct talks last year to try to contain tensions.

A fifth round of talks between regional rivals was held in Baghdad in April, which Tehran described as “positive”.

Riyadh severed ties with Tehran in 2016 after Iranian protesters stormed the Saudi embassy in the Iranian capital following the execution of a Shiite cleric in Saudi Arabia.
