A student who took off her underwear at an Iranian university does not pose a security concern but is a “problematic individual” who is receiving treatment, a government spokesman said.
The young woman stripped naked on Saturday at the Islamic Azad University in Tehran, an act that was widely perceived on social media as a protest against Iran’s strict Islamic dress code.
“Rather than viewing this issue through a security lens, we are looking at it through a social lens and seek to address the issues of this student as a problematic individual,” government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani said on Tuesday ( 5) in the first official reaction to the event.
She said the young woman, identified as Ahoo Daryaei on social media, was transferred from a police station to a treatment center, but did not say what treatment she would receive.
“It is still too early to talk about this student’s return to university. According to a video posted by her husband, she needs treatment and this needs to be completed before taking the next steps,” Mohajerani added on the government website.
The woman was detained by university security guards. A university spokesperson, Amir Mahjob, told X on Saturday “at the police station, it was discovered that she was under severe mental pressure and had a mental disorder.”
A growing number of Iranian women have defied authorities by discarding their veils following nationwide protests that followed the September 2022 death of a young Iranian Kurd, Mahsa Amini.
She died in the custody of the morality police for allegedly violating hijab rules. Security forces violently suppressed the revolt.

On Monday (4), the semi-official Tasnim news agency said that those reacting on social media were “the same anti-Iran movement that attacked the Mahsa Amini case in 2022”.
The unofficial website Khabaronline reported that the government spokesperson said the young woman was not facing any criminal charges.
