Iran’s new president Masoud Pezeshkian took office on Tuesday (30).
Leaders including Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani and Tajikistan President Emomali Rakhmon joined Pezeshkian at the ceremony. Brazil’s representative at the event is Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, who will also attend an official dinner with Pezeshkian that evening.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei formally endorsed Pezeshkian as the country’s president on Sunday (28).
Pezeshkian, a relatively moderate politician, takes office at a time of escalating tensions in the Middle East over the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza and Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Iran warned Israel on Sunday against what it called any new adventure in Lebanon after Israeli authorities blamed Hezbollah for a rocket attack on Saturday (27) that hit a soccer field in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, killing 12 people, and vowed to inflict a heavy response. Hezbollah denied any responsibility for the attack.
Pezeshkian is replacing hardline President Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash in May.
