Iran’s nuclear program is ‘galloping’, says atomic energy agency chief

Iran’s nuclear program is “galloping” and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has very limited visibility into what is happening, IAEA chief Rafael Grossi told Spanish newspaper El País in an interview published on Friday. (22).

In June, Iran began removing essentially all of the agency’s monitoring equipment installed under its 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.

Grossi said at the time that it could be a “fatal blow” to the chances of resuming the deal after the United States withdrew from the pact in 2018.

“The result is that for almost five weeks I have had very limited visibility, with a nuclear program that is galloping, and so if there is a deal, it will be very difficult for me to reconstruct the puzzle of the entire period of forced blindness.” he told El País.

Grossi had said in June that there was a window of just three to four weeks to restore at least some of the monitoring that was being discarded before the IAEA lost its ability to bring together Iran’s most important nuclear activities.

Since then-US President Donald Trump withdrew Washington from the deal and reimposed sanctions on Tehran in 2018, Iran has violated many of the agreement’s limits on its nuclear activities, and is enriching uranium to near the grade needed to be used in weapons. .

Western powers warn that the country is getting closer and closer to making a nuclear bomb. Iran denies wanting this.

“It is not impossible (rebuilding the puzzle), but it will require a very complex task and perhaps some specific agreements,” Grossi, who was visiting Madrid, said in an interview with El País.
