Iraq: At least 82 dead from fire at hospital for coronavirus patients

The Iraqi Interior Ministry says 82 people have been killed and 110 injured in a fire that broke out in hospital for patients with Covid-19 in Baghdad.

The tragedy that angered the Iraq, is attributed to negligence.

Many victims were being treated by intubation when oxygen cylinders exploded, causing a huge fire that quickly engulfed suspended ceilings and other flammable materials, doctors and firefighters said.

“We urgently need to review security measures in all hospitals to prevent a recurrence of such tragic events in the future,” Interior Ministry spokesman Khalid al-Muhana said in a statement on state television.

The fire broke out on Saturday at Ibn Hatib Hospital in the Diyala Bridge area.

Relatives of the patients rushed into the flames to save their loved ones.

A man who had gone to visit his brother described that some people jumped out of the windows to escape. “The fire spread like wildfire. I took my brother out on the street, next to the security post. Then I went back and reached the top floor, which did not burn. “I found a girl, around 19, who could not breathe, she was about to die,” said Ahmet Zaki. “I grabbed her by the shoulders and ran downstairs. People were jumping… Doctors were falling on cars. Everyone was jumping (from the windows). “And I kept going up, getting people out,” he added.

The patients were transferred to other hospitals. But many relatives are still in the hospital, many hours after the fire was extinguished, as they could not find their own people anywhere else.
