Iraq: Presidential election postponed indefinitely

The election of the President of his Republic has been postponed indefinitely Iraq by parliament. This is because a quorum of two thirds of the deputies in the semicircle was not reached, a parliamentary official and a journalist of the French Agency announced.

The lawmakers of Iraq’s most important parties, respecting the boycott announced by their respective leaderships, did not enter the parliament hall where only 58 of the 329 deputies were present, the parliament’s media service announced.

As a result, an official confirmed to the French Agency that he asked not to be named, “there will be no vote to elect the president”. No date has been set for a new vote.

Boycott at the meeting

Before the start of the meeting, which was scheduled for noon, a journalist of the French Agency had seen that they were only around 20 Membersinstead of the dozens that usually enter the parliament building located in the Green Zone, in the heart of Baghdad, where strict security measures are applied.

Agence France-Presse notes that at least two-thirds of the 329 deputies required to vote were unlikely to be present in the semicircle.

The Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, the Coalition for the Sovereignty of Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi, and the Democratic Party of Kurdistan (PDK), representing all 155 deputies, had successively announced that they would boycott the meeting in order to have more time to agree on a candidate.

In the rival political camp, the Cooperation Framework, which unites Shiite pro-Iranian parties, had also announced its intention not to participate in today’s vote, according to APE-MPE, citing AFP.

Twenty-five candidates are running for the presidency, but two experienced politicians stand out: Hosyar Zebari, a former minister from the PDK, and outgoing President Barham Saleh, of the rival Kurdistan Patriotic Union (UPK) party.

However, Zebari’s candidacy was suspended yesterday, Sunday, “temporarily” by the court, after an appeal against the MP based on allegations of corruption.
