Iraq: Repays war reparations to Kuwait 30 years after invasion

More than 30 years after Iraq invaded Kuwait, Baghdad has repaid war reparations by paying more than $ 52 billion, an adviser to the Iraqi prime minister said today.

On August 2, 1990, the Iraqi army invaded and annexed the oil-rich emirate of Kuwait. Seven months later he was expelled from an international coalition under the US.

“Iraq has closed the issue of war reparations to Kuwait by paying the last part of those reparations,” said Mozher Saleh, the Iraqi prime minister’s economic adviser.

In total, Iraq paid $ 52.4 billion (46.3 billion euros) to Kuwait, he said. “This is not a small amount, this amount would be enough to build a power grid in Iraq that would serve the country for years,” he said.

Iraq, where infrastructure is on the verge of collapse, is facing daily power outages, despite the fact that the country is rich in hydrocarbons.

Saleh expressed hope that the sums given until now for war reparations would now be used for development projects.

The Central Bank of Iraq announced the day before yesterday, Tuesday, that it had paid the last part of the war reparations to Kuwait, amounting to 44 million dollars.

In 2014, when Iraq faced the spread of Islamic State, which eventually took over a third of the country, Baghdad had suspended compensation payments. In 2018, after the defeat of the IK, the Iraqi authorities began to pay this money again to Kuwait.

Compensation was given to individuals, companies, governments and other organizations that suffered losses that were directly caused by the Iraqi invasion and occupation.
