Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sundani defended the presence of US troops in his country and did not set a timetable for their withdrawal, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal published today.
Referring to U.S. and NATO military forces training and assisting Iraqi units in the war against Islamic State but largely staying out of combat, Sudani stressed that foreign forces are still necessary. “The elimination of the Islamic State takes more time,” he said.
Sundani, who took office last October, told the WSJ that he plans to send a delegation of senior officials to Washington for talks with their American counterparts next month, adding that Baghdad would like to have similar relations with Washington with those of Saudi Arabia and other Gulf oil and gas producing countries.
“I don’t see it as something impossible, to see Iraq have a good relationship with Iran and the US,” stressed the Iraqi prime minister.
