Two drones trapped by explosives were shot down by Iraqi air defenses as they approached Ain al-Assad air base, where US troops are stationed.
U.S. officials have recently warned that attacks on U.S. forces in Iraq and Syria could escalate, in part due to the two-year anniversary of the death of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.
A similar attack was averted on Monday when Iraqi air defenses shot down two drones approaching a base near Baghdad International Airport.
Soleimani was killed on January 3, 2021, near Baghdad airport, in a drone strike ordered by then-US President Donald Trump. On Monday, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi threatened retaliation if Trump did not stand trial.
