Iraq announced today that it will organize two new repatriation flights of migrants stranded on the border between Belarus and Poland, a week after the return of about 400 people, mostly Iraqi Kurds.
The Ministry of Transport organized two special flights for tonight. According to the announcement, the two planes departed from Baghdad International Airport bound for Minsk. It was not immediately clear how many migrants would be repatriated on these flights.
A spokesman for Iraqi Kurdistan authorities told AFP that a plane carrying 185 people was expected to land in Arbil after midnight and then continue on to Baghdad. The same route was followed last week by the flight of the Iraqi national airline, Iraqi Airways.
Since the beginning of the crisis, thousands of people have gathered on Belarus’ border with Poland, hoping to cross into Western Europe. Many, including Iraqi Kurds, have been trapped in the area, spending all their savings. Polish media estimate that at least 12 people have died on both sides of the border.
