Hundreds of Iraqis, who had been camping for weeks on Belarus’ border with the EU, were checking in for a return flight to Iraq today, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said.
Immigrants, mostly Iraqi Kurds, are expected to board a flight to Minsk at 1:45 p.m. local time to Arbil in the autonomous region of northern Kurdistan in Iraq and then to Baghdad, the ministry said.
Iraqis, especially Kurds, make up a significant portion of the estimated 4,000 migrants stranded in Belarus’s cold-blooded forests trying to cross into Lithuania, Latvia and Poland.
Many say that the Belarusian authorities did not allow them to return to Minsk.
The EU is seeking to end what it says is a policy by Belarus to push migrants to the border in retaliation for sanctions imposed by Brussels in Minsk on protests last year against the controversial re-election of the veteran. .
Mr Lukashenko has said that Belarus is trying to force migrants to return to their homeland, but that no one wants to return.
At least eight people have been killed at the border in recent months, including a 19-year-old Syrian who drowned in a river trying to cross into the EU.
