The Irish government today announced new severe restrictions on the hospitality industry and home visits to reduce the rate of Covid-19 infections after officials warned that the new ‘Omicron’ variant was likely to increase pressure on the healthcare system.
“The dangers associated with the transition to the Christmas season without a few restrictions … are simply too great,” Prime Minister Michel Martin said in a televised address.
We will reinstate restrictions on Covid-19 following a “very strong” recommendation from health officials, Martin said.
Omicron is in danger of causing a “very serious crisis,” the prime minister said. “The more we read about the Omicron variant, the more we worry.”
The nightclubs will be closed until January 9. Only those who are at tables in the bars will be served. A maximum of six people will be at each table in bars and restaurants.
The Prime Minister promised financial support to the hospitality industry.
