The regional electricity supplier Irkutskenergosbyt has filed a lawsuit against the owners of private mining farms for 73.3 million rubles.
Irkutskenergosbyt, part of the energy company Irkutskenergo,
filed civil lawsuits against miners mining cryptocurrencies in residential buildings. The supplier accuses individuals mining cryptocurrencies of entrepreneurial activity and illegal use of electricity at a low price intended for the population.
The regional electricity supplier reported that in 2021 it filed more than a dozen claims against miners in the amount of 73.3 million rubles. The court ruled in favor of Irkutskenergosbyt so far on 9 charges. According to the court order, miners were transferred to tariffs for enterprises. After recalculating the tariff, the owners of the mining farms will pay the company 18.7 million rubles. According to representatives of the organization and miners, litigation is a slow and inefficient path. A comprehensive solution is required from the regional authorities.
The problem of the congestion of energy networks in the region is very serious. In October, the Governor of the Irkutsk Region Igor Kobzev sent a letter to Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak with a request to assist in the recognition of the mining of cryptocurrencies as entrepreneurial activity.
The head of the Baikal region drew attention to the fact that in 2021, electricity consumption in the region by individuals increased by 159%. He blames illegal miners for this. The Governor stressed that such a load leads to accidents and there have already been precedents. Therefore, mining should be equated with entrepreneurial activity, so that farm owners use electricity at special rates. Recently, Kobzev announced that he sees a solution to the energy issue with miners in the provision of separate areas and lines for mining cryptocurrencies.
