Israel’s prized air defense system, Iron Dome, is activated when the country faces air attacks. The country also has medium- and long-range defense systems known as “David’s Sling”, Patriot and Arrow. But what is Iron Dome? The system uses radar to detect and intercept rockets, missiles and drones. The Iron Dome was developed by the state-owned Israeli company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems with US support. It consists of a series of mobile units towed by trucks and positioned around the country. When their radars detect a threat, the information is sent to a “battle management center” where military personnel analyze it, predict its path and point of impact, and decide which missile launcher to use to intercept it.
