Irregular migrant arrivals in the EU increased by 64% in 2022

The number of irregular entries increased by 64% in 2022 compared to 2021 immigrants in the European Union reaching their highest level since 2016.

The relevant announcement was made on Friday (13/1) by the European Border Service, Frontex.

The European agency recorded 330,000 irregular entries in 2022, 45% of them in the Balkan corridor.

The number of Syrians has doubled in this period and amounts to 94,000.

“This is the second year in a row with a strong increase in the number of irregular entries,” says Frontex in a statement, clarifying that Syrians, Afghans and Tunisians together represent 47% of irregular entries into the European Union in 2022.

In the Western Balkans corridor, 145,000 crossings were recorded, which is an increase of 136% compared to the previous year.

On the central Mediterranean road, the second most common, the number of crossings exceeded 100,000, corresponding to an increase of 50%.

About 10% of the entries concern women and 9% minors.
