Is dengue more dangerous for the elderly? Understand

Brazil surpassed 2.5 million cases of dengue this Monday (1st). In the first three months of the year, the number of deaths reached 923 and threatens to break the record from 2022, which had 1,016 confirmed deaths throughout the entire year. Of the 2,573,293 probable cases registered, 360,055 are patients over 60 years of age, which represents around 14% of cases.

Doctor Maura Salaroli, infectious disease specialist at Hospital Sírio-Libanês, explains that patients over 65 years of age are more likely to develop severe cases of the disease and lead to death.

“When we use the risk classification, patients over 65 years of age, even without any other disease, are already characterized as group B, in which we need to perform a blood count and, sometimes, daily care”, reports the doctor.
