Is Intel having problems with a new process technology again? The company is evaluating the possibility of releasing Meteor Lake CPUs at TSMC facilities

Intel has been mastering the 10 nm process technology for a very long time, but at the moment it has already become familiar to consumers. It has produced Ice Lake, Tiger Lake CPUs, Alder Lake is based on it, and the upcoming Raptor Lake will also be based on it.

But then – sometime in 2023 – Meteor Lake processors are waiting for us, which are very important for Intel. Firstly, it will be the next full-fledged new generation (Alder Lake and Raptor Lake are related), and secondly, these CPUs should be produced using the 7nm process technology. Intel itself has spoken about this more than once, except that now it calls this process technology Intel 4.

According to recent data, Intel is now evaluating the possibility of releasing Meteor Lake processors using a different process technology. We are talking about the standards of 5 nm and the capacities of TSMC. In connection with what Intel thinks about this option, it is not clear, but this may be due to either Intel’s problems with the development of a new process technology, or the fact that TSMC’s solution is simply better.

Whether such a transfer would mean a delay in the release of Meteor Lake is not yet clear. It’s no secret that certain chips are initially created for their release according to a specific technical process, so adaptation may take additional time.
