Is “It Ends With Us” based on real events?

Spoiler alert: The following text contains spoilers for the story of “It Ends With Us”.

In an interview with Today in July 2023, Colleen Hoover spoke about the “inspiration” for the book. The work portrays Lily Bloom living in an abusive relationship with Ryle Kincaid, without realizing it at first.

The idea for the plot came from a relationship that the author closely followed in real life.

“My mom and dad got divorced when I was 2 years old, and one of my earliest memories was him throwing a TV at her,” Hoover told the outlet. “She was able to get out of that relationship. And then from that point on, I just remember growing up with a mom who was so strong and independent.”

“I simplified what she went through,” the author added. “Ryle is a cooler character than my dad was.”

Hoover noted that he often asked his mother how she had the courage to leave her father while raising two young children. Their stories helped shape “It Ends With Us.”

Hoover also noted in the interview that she found it “heartwarming” that her mother’s story had given other women the strength to leave dangerous situations behind.
