The funk player MC Daniel He showed on social media, last Wednesday (30), the results of his back after spending seven hours getting tattoos. The artist reported that he received anesthesia so as not to feel pain in the area.
Daniel is not the only one who adheres to anesthesia so as not to feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure. Names like MC Pedrinho , DJ Lucas and MC Cabelinho they also resorted to sedation to get tattoos.
“General anesthesia is, in a way, safe, as long as some necessary standards are followed, such as fasting for eight hours, the patient cannot have the flu or have other acute illnesses at that time, for example”, says Roberta Risso , anesthesiologist specializing in pain at Hospital Alemão Oswaldo Cruz, at CNN .
“Sedation is a much lighter procedure than general anesthesia and is more commonly used for tattoos, being safe for that. However, it is important to remember that, every time we make a patient more drowsy, it is important that they do not have a full stomach. Therefore, it is necessary to follow the fasting and necessary recommendations”, he adds.
According to the Brazilian Society of Anesthesiology (SBA), the risks of receiving sedation to perform tattoos “are the same as those observed in any patients who will undergo other types of surgeries and interventions”.
In a note sent to CNN the entity stated that “there are factors related to the procedures, such as the intensity and extent of the intervention, and factors related to the patient’s own physical conditions, such as the presence of diseases that could compromise and even prevent the performance and postponement of elective procedures”, with the use of anesthesia.
What precautions should be taken when using anesthesia to get tattoos?
In September 2023, the SBA issued a note describing that anesthesia for tattoos must comply with current standards determined by the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM).
“SBA understands that this is a painful procedure. However, to date, the administration of anesthesia is subject to the presence of at least two doctors: the anesthesiologist and the professional who performs the surgical or diagnostic procedure, including the dentist, considering Law No. 5,081, of 24 December August 1966”, he states.
Another more recent opinion, No. 38/2001, concludes that: “The anesthetic act is the term of a binomial that is complemented by another doctor, excluding, due to the different nature of their training, professionals who do not share of the attributes that characterize those who dedicate themselves to medicine”.
However, if it were permissible to provide anesthetic assistance to people who will undergo tattooing, the anesthetic act “must strictly comply with what is established in Resolution CFM 2174 of 2017, which contains several recommendations, including a careful pre-anesthetic evaluation and other requirements”.
Other CFM resolutions deal with the performance of procedures in the outpatient environment, which must also be respected by anesthesiologists.
Therefore, if the tattoo procedure with anesthesia complies with current regulations, the SBA argues that the patient must be previously evaluated by an anesthesiologist preferably in an outpatient consultation before admission (in a hospital or outpatient unit).
“At that time, it is up to the anesthesiologist, after a careful interview and physical examination, to decide whether or not additional tests are necessary. The anesthesiologist may also request the opinion of another doctor, such as a cardiologist, for example, if he/she needs more detailed information about the functional status”, says the society.
After completing this assessment, the anesthesiologist presents the patient with an Informed Consent Form, in which he declares that he is aware of the risks and safety of the procedure. Furthermore, it is the anesthesiologist who must apply the anesthesia.
Furthermore, Risso explains that sedation for tattoos can be done outside of the hospital environment. “However, even so, they must be carried out in environments that have a minimum of structure, with the supply of oxygen and resuscitation materials in case ambulance support is necessary if there is a complication and this patient needs to be taken to another environment”, he adds.
When is anesthesia not indicated?
Sedation is contraindicated for patients who use medications that cause gastric emptying, such as Ozempic, for example, as Risso points out. Furthermore, the procedure should not be carried out on people who are infectious or allergic at the time of application.
“Patients who have a history of an allergic reaction to any component of anesthesia should also not receive anesthesia”, he advises.
