Is tonic water bad or well? Nutritionist responds

THE tonic It is widely used in cocktails with and without alcohol, and is considered, by many people, a “healthy” alternative to soft drinks. But is this true? Is there any health benefit in drinking?

According to Joyce Chiereato, nutritionist and nutrition teacher at the University of Franca (UNIFRAN), despite the name, tonic water is nothing more than a soda made with mineral water, sugar, gas and quinine.

“We cannot say that it is healthier, but it has a lower caloric value than ordinary soft drinks, widely used in the preparation of beverages such as cocktails, especially GIN,” he says to CNN .

But what about the quinine? Is it good for health?

Originally, tonic water was developed for medicinal purposes due to its quinine content, used to prevent and treat malaria. Quinine is a chemical compound of bitter taste that has antipyretic, antimalic and analgesic functions. It is extracted from the bark of a plant called Cinchona.

According to Chiereato, the quinine brings some health benefits. In addition to being used in the treatment of malaria, in the past, quinine hydrochloride can:

  • Help with circulation and treat vertigo such as labyrinthitis and Ménière syndrome;
  • Strengthen hair by stimulating hair follicles and hair roots, helping to combat hair loss;
  • Improve digestion, stimulating saliva production;
  • Relieve burning, nausea and unpleasant sensations of weight in the stomach;
  • Detoxify the body, helping toxin elimination;
  • Heal and regenerate the skin, neutralizing free radicals responsible for cell oxidation.

However, tonic water consumption should be done in moderation, even if it is a low calorie drink. “Excessive consumption can cause some health problems, such as weight gain, increased blood pressure and allergic reactions. It is important to remember that diabetic patients, pregnant women, infants, children and people with quinine sensitivity should avoid consumption,” Chiereate warns.

To add tonic water to a balanced and healthy diet, the expert advises to opt for sugar -free versions. “For example, a traditional can has approximately 130 calories, while zero has only 34 calories,” he adds.
