He acknowledged that the world has changed a lot in the 40 years since the publication, in 1982, and understands that ideas, words and terms appear in his work that may be offensive today because they are not politically correct.
“If an editor asked me to republish, I would reduce the book by many pages,” she said. “I prefer not to think about what I wrote, because there is no way to correct it anymore.”
Commenting on the expression “politically incorrect”, Isabel stated that “humor no longer makes sense, because humor is always incorrect, it is cruel, it is ironic. It seems to me that things are not acceptable today.”
Still in the interview, she talked about a miniseries that will be released soon inspired by the book and commented on the 1993 film adaptation, which has Meryl Streep, Jeremy Irons, Glenn Close, Wynona Ryder and Antonio Banderas in the cast.
“At that time you couldn’t have a successful commercial film if it wasn’t in English. People weren’t used to it, it had to be with Hollywood stars, because if they didn’t recognize the actors, it would never be successful,” he said.
“It was all shot in Europe, with a Hollywood cast, and there was nothing Latin America or Chile,” he continued.
“But today, everything has changed a lot. You can make a series, a movie, in any language, that will watch you”, she concluded.
The new series will have 10 episodes and is still in production. The Chilean filmmaker Francisca Alegría will direct.
