At least 12 people, including three civilians and seven Peshmerga fighters, were killed in an attack on a village near Arbil, Iraqi Kurdistan, which was attributed to the Islamic State, the regional government said today.
Last Thursday night, jihadists attacked the village of Kidir Ziza, south of Arbil, killing three civilians. The peshmerga, the armed forces of Iraqi Kurdistan, then launched an operation and “seven fighters were killed by an explosive device detonated by ISIS militants,” the statement said.
The three civilians killed, three brothers aged 11 to 24, were the sons of a local village official.
After its invasion in 2014 in Iraq and Syria and the occupation of huge areas, the IK saw its “caliphate” collapse.
Iraq declared victory over the Islamic State jihadists in late 2017. But they continue to launch attacks on civilians and security forces in the north of the country.
Today, the jihadist group “maintains a largely secret presence in Iraq and Syria and conducts operations on both sides of the two countries’ borders,” according to a UN report released earlier this year.
In these two countries the IC maintains “a total of 10,000 active fighters”, according to the report.
The most recent large-scale offensive launched by the ISIS in Iraq was in July against a market in the Shiite district of Sadr City in Baghdad, which killed about 30 people.
At the end of November, five peshmergas were killed in a bomb attack for which IK claimed responsibility.
