The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the murder of a Chinese citizen in Takhar province, in northern Afghanistan, in a post on the Telegram channel on Wednesday night (22).
Afghan police in the province said on Wednesday that a Chinese national had been murdered and that a preliminary investigation had been launched, but it was unclear who was behind the attack.
Islamic State said it attacked a vehicle carrying the Chinese national, resulting in death and damage.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Thursday (23) that it was “deeply shocked” by the case and demanded that the Afghan side thoroughly investigate the murder and severely punish the perpetrators.
“We call on the Afghan interim government to take resolute and effective measures to ensure the security of Chinese civilian institutions and projects in Afghanistan,” said ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning at a press conference.
China was the first country to appoint an ambassador to Afghanistan during Taliban rule and has expressed a desire to increase trade and investment ties.
The Taliban took control in 2021, promising to restore security to the war-torn nation.
Attacks have continued, including one in 2022 on a Kabul hotel popular with Chinese investors.
The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for many of them.
