The Islamic State group has vowed to avenge its leader’s death in February and has called on its supporters to take advantage of the war in Ukraine to repeat the attacks in Europe.
On February 3, US President Joe Biden announced the death of former Islamic State leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurashi, who was blown up during a US special forces operation in northwestern Syria.
His death was confirmed by Islamic State on March 10.
“We are announcing … a blessed campaign of revenge,” Abu Omar al-Mujahir, a spokesman for the group, said in a statement to the Telegram.
Islamic State also calls on its supporters to repeat their attacks in Europe, seizing “the opportunity to fight among the crusaders”, meaning Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
