Isle of MTV, the festival in Malta with Nelly Furtado, Raye and DJ Snake

On one side the red tower, the old fortress, the cathedral with the Caravaggios, the covered and colorful balconies that characterize the narrow streets of the center, the so-called gallarija. On the other hand, the glittering yachts, the windows of the dealers, the swimming pools on the rooftops of the hotels, the ultramodern buildings that house the headquarters of international companies. Locate Malta in a timeline it’s almost impossible: everything is close, everything is different. Nothing alienating, of course, but the feeling is of turning the corner and finding yourself in a different era.

In this bizarre time Machine, in the style of Doc and Marty, music comes out of the speakers Isle of MTV Festival, the iconic TV station’s summer event on the Mediterranean island, which has previously hosted artists such as Lady Gaga, Snoop Dog and David Guetta. This year too, for the 16th edition of the event, thousands of enthusiasts gathered in the historic Il-Fosos Square to watch the show of three exceptional headliners: Nelly Furtado, Raye And DJ Snaketotally in line – in their diversity – with the atmosphere of Malta.

She, who released her first album in 2000, brings all of them to Malta the most significant hits of his career – from I’m Like a Bird (which earned her a Grammy) to Promiscuous (over a billion streams on Spotify) – capable of bringing back memories upon memories, many of which are linked to MTV, officially landed in Italy in 1997 with programs that marked an era.

To complete the leap into the past, the mega screen projects some clips from the video clips originals, which have long been the heart of the American broadcaster, now owned by the group ParamountThe audience appreciates, dances and sings at the top of their lungs: obviously there are many Millennials – those who experienced the boom of both Nelly and MTV as teenagers, making shows like TRL a kind of daily liturgy – but also many very young people and even entire families. Total transversality, for a journey that is in all respects multigenerational.

On the other hand, there are not only memories: every self-respecting time machine is in fact capable of travel into the future too. So Nelly launches Heartthe single that anticipates his new album 7 coming in September, sharing the internship with Liliana Saumet, the colombian singer of Stereo Bomb with whom she worked on the piece. “Having met women like that changed my life,” the pop star revealed in a press conference. “Coming back with a new album? I realized that my music, after years, still entertains people».

Fun is also the key word in the performance of RayeBritish singer – fresh from her success atUmbria Jazz – which was awarded last March six BRIT Awards out of seven nominations, thus becoming the artist with the most wins in a single edition of the award. A few notes from his famous Escapism to test power and magnetism of her voice, which blends soul, RnB and electronics: people, in a spell mode, follow her in her eclecticismfrom Worth It to Pradaup to the intense Genesis, the new single of a good seven minutes.
