Isolated by the flood in RS, residents have nowhere to sleep and help arrives from the sky

The city of São Jerônimo, around 280 kilometers from Porto Alegre, was completely isolated after heavy rain hit the meeting since last week. The municipality is bathed by the Jacuí River, which flooded with the high volume of water received. One person died in the municipality.

According to reports from residents, the water began to recede this Thursday (9) and some urban cleaning actions could be initiated. Despite this, many residents whose homes were damaged continue to sleep in improvised places.

“We are isolated from the metropolitan region by land, and supplies only arrive by helicopter and, in part, by boats coming from General Câmara”, reported documentary filmmaker Juliano Ambrosini.

In a video recorded by him, it is possible to see the moment that a Brazilian Air Force (FAB) aircraft drops a package of supplies using a parachute. Look:

According to the FAB, the load launched yesterday in the city contained 2.4 tons of bales of water and basic food baskets.

“One of the most urgent needs is mattresses, as many people are sleeping improvised. Furthermore, cleaning and personal hygiene products are essential at this time”, comments Ambrosini.

The municipal civil defense says it organizes logistics for the supplies collected by the city to reach residents and that resources are being sought from the federal government. A sufficient quantity to supply citizens has been gathered and should be delivered on Friday (10).

Help from the air

Since last Thursday (9), FAB has been carrying out operations to deliver essential items to cities isolated by floods in Rio Grande do Sul.

Officials also launched, yesterday, a food kit for a family who is stranded in Rio Pardo (RS). Bales of water, food, lanterns and ponchos for heating were thrown.

Before, the military sent them a note with instructions, according to a released note:

“Residents are advised to set up a 'Y' sign on the ground if they need to be rescued or 'X' if they want supplies. In this case, the islanders set up an X sign.
