Israel accuses Iran of “environmental attack” in the Mediterranean

The Israel accused Iran, its sworn enemy, on Wednesday (3/3), that he committed an “environmental attack” by dumping many tons of tar on the Israeli shores of the Mediterranean from a ship that “came from Iran” according to the Jewish state.

“A pirate ship with a Libyan flag that departed from Iran is responsible for this environmental attack,” Israeli Environment Minister Gila Gamliel told a news conference. “(…) Iran carries out terrorist acts by carrying out environmental attacks,” he added.

Oil spill, one of the worst in Israel in decades, caused an ecological disaster which will take months or even years to clean up, according to environmental organizations.

Israeli Environment Minister Gila Gamliel said on Twitter today that the Jewish state located the ship responsible for a major oil spill.

Tons of tar on the beaches

Strong winds and unusually high waves hit the Israeli coast in mid-February, spilling tons of tar on the beaches, from Ross Hanikra, in the north near Lebanon to Ashkelon, in the south, on the border with the Gaza Strip.

Investigations focused on an unidentified ship sailing 50 kilometers (30 miles) off the coast on February 11 as the possible source of this ecological disaster that will take months or even years to clean up, according to environmental organizations.

Army teams, civilians and members of non-governmental organizations deployed along the country’s shores to clear tar from the beaches.

On Sunday, the Israeli authorities rescued from any suspicion a Greek tanker and more than ten other ships, which were suspected of causing this ecological disaster.

“There are those responsible for this pollution and we will not leave this environmental crime unpunished,” she said.
