Israel and Poland have agreed to mend relations strained by a law introduced last year by the Polish government that makes it harder for Jews to reclaim property confiscated by Nazis during World War II. and subsequently came under the control of the country’s communist regime.
The two countries announced that their ambassadors would mutually reinstate their ambassadors.
The move marks a political U-turn for Israel’s new Prime Minister Yair Lapid, who as foreign minister had denounced as “anti-Semitic and immoral” the bill affecting properties seized by Nazi German occupiers and kept by Poland’s post-war communist leaders .
“It was agreed that relations will be restored to their proper course,” Israeli President Isaac Herzog said in a statement after talks with his Polish counterpart Andriy Duda.
“Both presidents expressed their hope that any future issues between Poland and Israel will be resolved through frank and open dialogue and in a spirit of mutual respect,” the statement said.
Duda’s office said the Polish ambassador to Israel, who had been recalled during the dispute, was expected to return. Herzog’s office said Israel’s new ambassador-designate to Poland would present his credentials in the coming days.
