Israel announces the beginning of extensive land operations in Gaza

The army of Israel announced on Sunday that it began “extensive land operations” in the north and south of Gaza.

This intensifies a new campaign in the territory where Israeli attacks killed at least 130 people at night, according to Palestinian health officials.

Israel made the announcement after sources on both sides state that there was no progress in a new round of indirect negotiations between Israel and the rebel Palestinian group Hamas in Qatar.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said Doha’s latest negotiations included discussions about a truce and a hostage withdrawal agreement.

A proposal was also included in ending the war in exchange for the exile of Hamas militants and the demilitarization of the territory – terms that Hamas had previously rejected.

The content of the statement was aligned with Israel’s previous statements, but at the time the negotiators gathered, some prospect of flexibility was offered in the position of Israel.

A senior Israeli official said there was no progress in negotiations so far.

The Israeli army claimed to have conducted a preliminary wave of attacks against more than 670 Hamas targets in Gaza last week to support a terrestrial operation, nicknamed “Gideon Carriages.”

The group claimed to have killed dozens of Hamas combatants.

Palestinian health officials claim that hundreds of people were killed, including many women and children.

Asked about Doha’s negotiations, a Hamas representative spoke to the Reuters news agency: “Israel’s position remains unchanged: they want to free the prisoners (hostages) without a commitment to end the war.”

The representative reiterated that Hamas proposed the liberation of all Israeli hostages in exchange for the end of the war, the removal of Israeli troops, the end of blocking humanitarian aid to Gaza and the liberation of Palestinian prisoners.

Israel’s declared goal in Gaza is the elimination of Hamas’s military and government capacities, which attacked Israeli communities on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people and capturing about 250 hostages.

The Israeli military campaign devastated the territory, expelling almost all residents of home and killing more than 53,000 people, according to Gaza’s health authorities.
