Israel bombed an area near the Syrian Presidential Palace in Damascus on Friday morning, the clearest sign of hostility to the Syrian authorities and willingness to intensify military action on behalf of the Minority Druse in the neighboring country.
The Israeli army said it had reached a “adjacent” area to the Sharaa Palace in Damascus, with no further details about the target. There were no immediate comments from the Syrian authorities or reports of victims.
A Syrian authority told Reuters that the target was about 100 meters east of the palace perimeter.
The action was “a clear message to the Syrian regime: we will not allow forces (Syrian) to position themselves south of Damascus or represent any threat to the Druse community,” pointed out Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and the country’s Minister of Defense, Israel Katz, in a joint statement.
The attack occurs after days of confrontation in Syria between Sunni and Drudos combatants, triggered by a recording allegedly insulting the Prophet Muhammad.
The clashes left more than 20 dead in cities around Damascus and triggered an initial “warning attack” by Israel in a city around the capital, which killed a member of Syrian security forces.
On Thursday (1st), the clashes began to spread faster to the province of Sweida, mostly Druse.
Israel has intensified military operations in Syria since the rebels deprived Bashar al-Assad in December, with bombing across the country and an incursion of land forces in the southwest.
