Israeli bombings in Gaza have killed at least 81 Palestinians over the past day, according to health authorities in the enclave, while emergency teams reported heavy and intense attacks on Thursday night (16).
At least 188 other people were injured, the Ministry of Health in Gaza said on Thursday (16). The number of people killed by Israeli strikes over the past day marked the highest daily death toll in 11 days, according to a tally by the CNN recent figures from the Ministry of Health.
Local emergency teams have described scenes of relentless shelling since Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire and hostage release agreement on Wednesday (15).
At least 77 Palestinians have been killed – including 21 children and 25 women – since the ceasefire was announced, Mahmoud Basal, a spokesman for the Gaza Civil Defense, told CNN .
Among those killed on Thursday (16) were two Palestinians in a school where displaced people were seeking refuge, in the Zeitoun neighborhood, central Gaza, according to civil defense. In northern Gaza, Israeli aircraft struck a house near a mosque, killing at least two people, civil defense said.
THE CNN has contacted the Israeli army for comment.
“Every time there is talk of a truce or ceasefire, we witness an escalation in the intensity of shelling,” Basal said in a voice message.
The overnight attack came after an agreement was reached between Hamas and Israel on Wednesday (15) – with the first phase expected to begin on Sunday (19) and last six weeks.
Human rights groups welcomed the news and increased calls for a permanent ceasefire.
