Israel: Bennett calls on Israelis to support his government

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett today published an open letter to the people of the country asking for their support so that his governing coalition does not collapse for the sake of political stability and the proper functioning of the state.

The letter was published on the first anniversary of the formation of Bennett’s coalition government, which is facing one crisis after another after losing a majority in the Knesset in early April.

The Israeli prime minister has tried to show his achievements over the past year and repel attacks by his predecessor, Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s longest-serving prime minister and leader of the main opposition, and has accused the government of not national security.

Bennett stressed that his coalition had brought political stability to Israel when it came to power a year ago after a series of elections in which it failed to form a government. The Israeli prime minister called on citizens to help maintain stability and criticized the opposition’s attacks.

“About a year ago, the state of Israel reached one of the most difficult times it has ever faced,” Bennett said.

Nationalist Bennett and centrist Yair Lapid formed a diverse governing coalition of 61 lawmakers last June that included the left, center, right-wing parties and an Arab coalition – for the first time in Israeli history. attempt to end Benjamin Netanyahu’s 12 years in power.

“Together with my colleagues in government, we have made Israel operational again, we have restored growth,” he said, adding that Israel was once again “at a historic crossroads.”

“Will we move forward with a functioning state or will we sink again into chaos, internal hatred, external weakness and the enslavement of the state to the needs of a single man?” The Israeli prime minister asked, referring to Netanyahu.

At the same time, Bennett posted on social media a pamphlet calling on supporters of the government, “the silent Zionist majority”, as he describes it, to “not leave us alone in the arena. Make your voice heard.”

“Spread the message: decent people with different views, who love the country can sit down together and work to improve it,” Bennett said in a pamphlet urging supporters of his government to share it. others, organize demonstrations, pick up the phone, and volunteer for the government.

Bennett’s ruling coalition lost its majority in April when Yamina’s MP Idit Silman resigned. Since then the government has been vulnerable to any motion of censure. This week, he was trying to win the support of several lawmakers to pass a major bill to extend the validity of Israeli law to Israelis living in the West Bank.

A poll aired last week on Channel 12 said Netanyahu would win 59 seats in parliament (out of a total of 120) if the election were held now, while the ruling coalition would win only 55.

After all, 46% of Israelis consider Netanyahu the best prime minister, compared to only 21% who believe that Bennett is more suitable.

According to the same poll, the majority of Israelis estimate that the current government will collapse in six months.
