Israel’s Foreign Minister, Eli Cohen, said this Tuesday (24) that he will not meet with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, after the UN chief criticized the bombings carried out by Israel in Gaza. .
“I will not meet with the UN Secretary-General. After the October 7th massacre, there is no place for a balanced approach. Hamas must be erased from the face of the planet!” Cohen wrote in a social media post.
At the UN Security Council meeting in New York this Tuesday, Guterres said he was “deeply concerned about the clear violations of international humanitarian law that we are witnessing in Gaza.”
“Protecting civilians does not mean ordering more than a million people to move to the south, where there is no shelter, no food, no water, no medicine, no fuel – and then continuing to bomb the south itself,” said Guterres. “Let me be clear: no party to an armed conflict is above international humanitarian law.”
Cohen, who was also present at the meeting, responded to Guterres: “What world do you live in? This is definitely not our world.”
Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, called on Guterres “to resign immediately” following his comments.
On social media, Erdan said that Guterres “is not fit to lead the UN” and accused him of showing understanding and compassion to Hamas.
