Israel claims highest-ever frequency of rocket attacks from Gaza

They said that over the past seven days, the Islamist group Hamas and the Islamic Jihad have fired 3,100 rockets from Gaza.

“This is the highest daily frequency of rocket attacks that Israel has encountered in the country’s history,” the IDF added.

It also called the “real threat”, adding that “millions of Israelis are living under fire” – and Israel “will continue to defend itself.”

Meanwhile, Gaza said Sunday 16 May was the deadliest day since the start of the current fighting with Israel – more than 40 people have died, BBC News reports.

Early Monday morning, the IDF reported that its fighters were “hitting terrorist targets” in Gaza.

According to BBC News, Israeli warplanes launched 80 airstrikes in several areas of Gaza shortly after Hamas fired a volley of rockets into southern Israel.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary General António Guterres said further hostilities could plunge the region into “an insurmountable crisis,” the BBC reports. He called for an immediate end to the “horrific violence”.
