Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said efforts by the International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor to issue arrest warrants for him and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not be successful, describing them as “despicable.”
The charges against Netanyahu and Gallant include “causing extermination, causing starvation as a method of warfare, including denying humanitarian aid supplies, deliberately targeting civilians in conflict,” ICC prosecutor Karim Khan told the news anchor. CNN Christiane Amanpour, on Monday (20).
Gallant reiterated comments he made at various points during the war on Tuesday, saying the Israeli military was fighting in accordance with international law “while taking unprecedented steps to facilitate humanitarian aid.”
Gallant hit back at Khan, saying that “the parallel he drew between the terrorist organization Hamas and the State of Israel is despicable.”
He also noted that Israel was not a signatory to the Court's jurisdiction and therefore did not recognize its authority.
Although Gallant said Israeli authorities have taken “unprecedented steps to facilitate humanitarian aid,” Israel’s months-long siege of the Palestinian territory has pulverized large parts of Gaza and drastically diminished critical supplies, exposing the entire population to the risk of starvation.
