Israel demands dissolution of UN commission after member’s ‘anti-Semitic comments’

Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid claimed yesterday that United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres should proceed with the dissolution of a commission of inquiry after the “anti-Semitic” statements of one of its members, intensifying the pressure on the international organization.

This UN commission investigates human rights violations in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In an interview uploaded on July 25 to the Mondoweiss website, Indian expert Milun Kothari, one of the three members of the committee, said among other things: “we are disappointed that social networking sites, largely controlled by the Jewish lobby, as well as certain NGOs are spending a lot of money to discredit us.”

“These anti-Semitic comments tarnish the entire UN,” Mr Lapid said in a letter to Mr Guterres. He called for “the removal of the three members of the committee and for this committee to be dissolved”, as he accused it of “fueling” anti-Semitism. The letter was released yesterday by the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office.

On Friday, Israel’s ambassador to Geneva, Meirav Eilon Sahar, also demanded that the committee be disbanded.

The chairperson of that committee, the South African Navi Pillai, emphasized that Mr. Kothari’s comments “seem to be deliberately taken out of context” and that they reflected the committee’s “disappointment in the face of Israel’s persistent lack of cooperation” with the experts.

Mr Lapid dismissed Ms Pillai’s explanations.

In a report released in June, the commission found Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories and its policy of discrimination against the Palestinian population to be “the main causes” of tensions and instability.
