A left-wing member of the Meretz party, who is part of Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s ruling coalition and resigned on Thursday, depriving him of a parliamentary majority, reconsidered her decision today.
Gaida Rinaoui Zoambi, 49, from the Arab minority in Israel, announced that she was leaving, denouncing the government’s policy towards the Arab Israelis. This minority is the descendants of the Palestinians who remained in their territories after the creation of Israel in 1948 and today constitute about 20% of the country’s population.
Foreign Minister Jair Lapid welcomed Zoabi’s return to the ruling coalition. “We have put aside our differences and together we are starting the work of the government and the coalition again,” he wrote on Twitter.
With Zoabi’s resignation, the ruling coalition, which consists of nationalists, centrists, leftists and Arab parties, was left with only 59 seats in the 120-member Knesset. It was preceded six weeks ago by the resignation of Yamina Idit Silman, the radical right, leaving the coalition with only 60 seats, as well as the opposition.
