Israel-Hamas War: White House Awaits Hamas Response to Hostage Release Proposal

CIA Director William Burns was in Cairo over the weekend for “a very important round” of negotiations to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza, and the Palestinian Islamist movement is now considering a new proposal, the White House said. White House spokesman John Kirby said the US is taking the talks very seriously and hopes to secure a deal to release the hostages as soon as possible, which would also lead to a ceasefire lasting about six weeks. The US official also stressed that more than 300 trucks carrying humanitarian aid had entered Gaza on Sunday, but the White House would continue to press Israel to allow more humanitarian supplies to go to the Palestinian enclave's residents.
