Israel has plans for eventual attack on Iran, outgoing army chief says

His armed forces Israel have adequately prepared for the eventuality of being ordered to attack the Iransaid their outgoing head, Lt. Gen. Aviv Kohavi.

He is handing over – he said – to the incoming chief of the Israeli general staff of national defense, Major General of the paratroopers Herchi Halevi, “army capable of attacking Iran’s nuclear facilities”.

“There are a number of plans; and it will only grow in the coming years”Lt. Gen. Kohavi said to ynet, the website of the newspaper Gedot Aharonot (“Latest News”), yesterday Friday (13/1).

Aviv Kohavi retires the day after tomorrow, Monday, the day he completes his four-year term in office. In total, he served in the Israeli army for almost forty years.

In another interview with the Walla news website, the outgoing head of the Chahal (an acronym for the Israeli armed forces in Hebrew) reiterated that “the army is ready to carry out its mission the day the order is given.”

Asked about the possibility that the US would not support the ventureLt. Gen. Kohavi insisted: “Israel must be able to carry out this mission even on its own.”

The new government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is already causing a “headache” for the administration of Joe Biden.

In accordance with Associated Pressjust days into her term, a controversial member of Netanyahu’s right-wing Cabinet angered US diplomats with a visit to a holy site in Jerusalem that some believe could be a harbinger of other controversial moves, including a massive expansion of building Jewish settlements on land claimed by the Palestinians.

At the same time, the Netanyahu administration has adopted punitive measures against the Palestinians that are in direct contrast to several recent moves by Biden to boost US-Palestinian relations. These include restoring aid to the Palestinian Authority that was cut during the Trump administration and allowing Palestinian officials to visit the United States.

According to analysts, the new Netanyahu administration is an unwelcome complication for Biden’s national security team as it seeks to shift attention away from the Middle East and toward rivals such as China and Russia.
