The expert contextualized Iran’s internal situation, mentioning the recent elections held in August following the death of leader Raize in a helicopter crash. In this election, the more moderate candidate won with 54% of the votes, defeating the radical Saeb Jalide.
Trevisan explained that Jalide went so far as to publicly charge Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, questioning the decision to leave the response to Israel to Hezbollah. This attitude, according to the professor, demonstrates the strength of the radicals and the internal tensions that the Iranian government faces.
‘Choreographed’ attack
The professor characterized the Iranian attack as “choreographed”, highlighting its ineffectiveness. According to information from the Israeli military, 120 cruise missiles were launched, but none of them came close to their targets. The only reported injury was a Palestinian civilian in the West Bank, hit by fragments of one of the missiles.
