Israel, Islamic Jihad agree ceasefire in Gaza after weekend of attacks

Israel says an agreement to restore a ceasefire to gaza will go into effect at 11:30 pm (local time) this Sunday (7th), following a similar announcement by Islamic Jihad.

A brief statement by the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office thanked Egypt for its efforts in mediating the truce and warned that if the truce was violated, “the State of Israel retains the right to respond firmly.”

The announcement came about 50 hours after the climb began, when Israel launched what it called a pre-emptive strikes against Islamic Jihad targets in Gaza.

As with previous escalations in Gaza, Egypt has taken a central role in efforts to end fighting between Israel and Palestinian militants.

Terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed. However, Egypt’s official state news agency reported that, in the push for a truce, Cairo was working to see the release of an Islamic Jihad militant captured by Israel six days ago, as well as to ensure that a Palestinian prisoner in hunger strike in an Israeli prison to be transferred to hospital for medical treatment.

Previous ceasefire agreements have seen Israel making commitments to facilitate the closure of Gaza.

Hamas, which stayed out of the fighting, said the Israeli operation represents a “new stage in the struggle for Palestinian freedom against Israeli occupation”.
