The Israeli Air Force says it has reached Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon in response to shots of transionic rockets, in the most significant outbreak of tensions since a ceasefire brought a crashing calm to the region.
Reports of witnesses from southern Lebanon to CNN They described the attacks as violent and widespread.
Israel and Hezbollah exchanged cross -border attacks 13 months after Gaza’s conflict, before Israel launched an intense land and air campaign in September last year, decimating the leadership of the Iran -supported militating group.
The Israeli attacks followed artillery and bombing of position tanks within Lebanon, and occurred after Sirens echoed in the north of Israel, while the military detected that five projectiles were fired at the country. According to Israel’s defense forces (IDF), three were intercepted by the country’s Air Force and two fell inside Lebanon.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered Israel’s defense forces to take “firm actions against dozens of terrorist targets.”
“Israel will not allow any damage to its citizens or sovereignty,” said Netanyahu.
The Lebanese army said it found and dismantled “three primitive rocket launchers in the area north of the Litani River” while conducting investigations after the incident. It was not immediately clear who was behind the release of rockets in Israel.
Hezbollah did not take responsibility for the incident. THE CNN contacted the group to comment, but has not yet received an answer.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz blamed the Lebanese government for the transionic attacks and promised to retaliate.
“We promise security to the communities of Galilee-and that is exactly what will happen,” Katz said in a statement on Saturday, referring to the inhabitants of northern Israel.
The Lebanese presidency condemned “attempts to drag once again to a cycle of violence,” saying President Joseph Aoun instructed the army to protect citizens from the country, as well as investigate Saturday morning incident.
Israel continues to maintain military presence in five places in southern Lebanon, although he agreed to withdraw as part of a ceasefire agreement signed in November last year.
The agreement has brought a significant reduction in more than a year of cross -border attacks and ended months of a large -scale war.
The last time Israel accused the Lebanese armed group of firing projectiles through the border was in early December.
North climbing occurs after Israel restarted military operations in Gaza earlier this week, ending a fragile truce that had been held since January.
