Israel today informed its citizens that they can stop wearing COVID-19 masks indoors, in the second such revision since the measure was suspended and then re-enacted last year due to an increase in cases.
The abolition of the mandatory use of the mask in closed, public spaces will take effect on Saturday and is subject to the approval of a parliamentary committee, according to a government announcement.
The use of a mask will continue to be mandatory in areas with a high risk of infection, such as aircraft, hospitals and nursing homes, according to the announcement.
Israelis can go outside without a mask from April 2021. Last June, the mandatory use of a mask indoors was abolished for two weeks and the measure came back into force due to the outbreak of the delta strain.
The number of daily COVID-19 cases reported by the Israeli health authorities has dropped to about 4,500 from more than 15,000 at the end of March.
The number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients has also decreased and stood at 222 yesterday compared to 296 at the end of March, according to data from the Ministry of Health.
About 64% of Israel’s 9.4 million people are considered vaccinated, according to the ministry. Israel began giving a fourth dose of the vaccine in January. The total death toll from the pandemic in Israel is 10,647.
